At more than 8 feet tall and a weight of more than 300 pounds, the ostrich is one of nature’s oddities. The largest of all birds, it cannot fly. Its huge body is precariously balanced on two long legs, each supported by only two toes. Today most ostriches are born in captivity and are farmed in their native Africa for their meat, feathers and hide, which makes good-quality leather. They can be domesticated and be trained for pulling carts. An ostriches finds shiny objects attractive, and happily gulps down watches, jwellery, and bits of glass and metal without visible ill effects
